Tampa

December 14 Gastropub

Tampa is a shimmery beach-rock quartet from the East Coast of Canada. With tight, driving rhythms and impeccable pop hooks, it’s not the music you’d expect from a small Acadian village (Moncton and Memramcook, NB), but Tampa’s unequivocal pride of place is a refreshing take on rural life.

It’s about unanswerable questions and kindness and friendship and fear. Produced by Grammy Award winning producer Drew Brown (Radiohead, Beck, Blonde Redhead, Charlotte Gainsbourg) and Simone Felice (The Lumineers, Bat For Lashes), More or Less features singles “Troubled Mind”, “Fool For Waiting” and “Just Fear”.

Wintersleep

March 27 Ballroom

“The average Canadian carries around with them in their head a vision of spaciousness.” So theorized Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer, describing a so-called ‘Canadian sound.’ For Schafer and many others, it was a sound defined by space, by the land and our distance from and proximity to it. For Harry Freedman, it was “gaunt” and “lonely.” Elaine Keillor called it “immense, empty, mysterious, harsh, indifferent, producing a response of awe mingled with terror and an intense sense of spiritual loneliness.”

On Wintersleep’s seventh full-length record, In the Land Of, this geography is both real and imagined. It is understood that our surroundings are not, in fact, essential or concrete elements; they’re constructed in relation to us, the inhabitants. Our identities, too, are constructed in relation to the land. The land, both physical and figurative, changes, and so do we. Familiar land. Foreign land. Inhospitable land. Unceded land. Stolen land. Dead land.

MONSTER TRUCK

MARCH 29 BALLROOM

There’s something comforting about a band name that delivers exactly what you are expecting to hear. The band realizes the potential for a sort of kitsch status being inadvertently placed upon them. However those curious to dig deeper will quickly realize their conviction for delivering authentic and original hard rock tunes.

The band was formed in 2009 by Jon Harvey (Bass & Lead vocals), Jeremy Widerman (Guitar & Vocals), Brandon Bliss (Organ & Vocals) and Steve Kiely (Drums & Vocals) as somewhat of a side-project for their other more serious bands (The Reason, Saint Alvia). Quickly the original plan of getting wasted and playing sloppy rock got twisted into something new entirely. Everyone’s influences gelled in a cohesive and exciting new take on all of the classic rock that had come before them. Quickly show offers piled up as well as festival slots and the band realized that they had something that was undeniably fun and exciting on their hands.

Tokyo Police Club

April 10 Ballroom

Alt-rock quartet Tokyo Police Club are going for a full reboot on their semi-self-titled fourth album TPC, released October 5, 2018 via Dine Alone Records.

The album brings a new perspective and revitalized sound as the indie darlings celebrate the tenth anniversary of their breakthrough debut Elephant Shell and return from a four year absence since their last studio album, 2014’s Forcefield. The gap tested the band both collectively and individually but has also wrought a fresh vibrancy to their material.

The first track from the new album “Hercules” proves they’ve discovered something special with hooks that are stronger than ever and a loose and lively mix that perfectly represents getting the band back together. For the band, it represents a crucial piece of the new project.
